Data domain local compression type

  • How does DD boost work?

DD Boost enables the backup server or application client to send only unique data segments, rather than all data, across the network to the PowerProtect DD appliance.
This process reduces the amount of data transferred over the network by 80 to 98 percent..

  • What is data domain in EMC NetWorker?

A Data Domain system provides an alternative for disk and tape volume pools in NetWorker.
The Data Domain file system is optimized for sequential read and write operations.
This provides for a great fit with existing NetWorker disk-based or VTL abilities..

  • Data Domain is disk-based Backup and Restore appliance, that provide data protection and disaster recovery (DR) in the enterprise environment.
Data Domain is designed to reduce the amount of disk storage that is required to retain and protect data.
  • DD Boost enables the backup server or application client to send only unique data segments, rather than all data, across the network to the PowerProtect DD appliance.
This process reduces the amount of data transferred over the network by 80 to 98 percent.
Apr 21, 2021Local compression further compresses the unique data segments with certain compression algorithm(s), such as lz, gzfast, gz, etc. The overallĀ
The gzfast compression algorithm is the default local compression method used on the DD6400, DD6900, DD9400, and DD9900. No additional configuration is required. This algorithm yields higher compression compared to the previous generation of Data Domain appliances which by default use the lz algorithm.

What is DDoS compression ratio?

DDOS uses " compression ratio " to measure the effectiveness of its data compression.
Generally, it is the ratio of the total user data size to the total size of compressed data or the used physical space size.
Data Domain file system is a "log-structured" dedupe file system.

What is dedupe & local compression in DDoS?

In Data Domain systems (DDOS), we do dedupe and local compression to compress user data.
De-duplication, or "dedupe," is used to identify redundant data segments and store only unique data segments.
Local compression further compresses the unique data segments with certain compression algorithm (s), such as:

  1. lz
  2. gzfast
  3. gz
  4. etc

How does local compression work?

Local compression simply reduces the size of a piece of data using a certain algorithm (note that some kinds of data are not compressible and applying compression algorithms on them may in fact slightly increase data size)

Usually, once an algorithm is decided, the data itself is the only factor of the compression ratio
