Dendrology origins

  • Dendrology is the study of wooden plants.
It is a branch of botany concerned primarily on trees and shrubs.
It is primarily focused on the characterization and identification of woody plants and their taxonomy.
Perhaps the first use of the word was in the year 1668 as the title of a book or encyclopedia on trees by Ulisse Aldrovandi, Italian physician and naturalist. Originally, dendrology included all aspects of trees, and in that time there was no science of forestry.
It is derived from two Greek words meaning trees and discourse or study, or the study of trees. A review of the history of usage of the term has been made by William A. Dayton (Dayton 1945).
