How do you test a wetting agent?
One method of knowing whether or not a liquid has a wetting agent in it is to spread the liquid on a surface that is coated in grease.
If the liquid does not contain a wetting agent, the its cohesive forces would overpower adhesive forces, causing the liquid to for droplets on the surface (Figure 2, left)..

Draves Test Method A standard lead weight attached to a copper hook with a string is then used to weigh the cut skein down and it is dropped into the cylinder. Timing begins when the weight touches the bottom of the cylinder and ends when the string becomes slack. Results are measured in seconds.

The Draves test consists of measuring the time required to wet a standard cotton skein in a 1g/L surfactant solution. In this comparison, we can see that the Exxal-based ethoxylate's wetting is significantly faster than the competitor.
