History

The name damson comes from Middle English damascene, damesene, damasin, damsin, and ultimately from the Latin (prunum) damascenum

Characteristics

The main characteristic of the damson is its distinctive rich flavour; unlike other plums it is both high in sugars and highly astringent

Cultivars

Several cultivars have been selected, and some are found in Great Britain, Ireland and the United States

White damson

Although the majority of damson varieties are blue-black or purple in colour, there are at least two now-rare forms of "white damson"

Uses

The skin of the damson can have a very tart flavour

What are the different types of damson trees?

Commonly grown varieties include Farleigh Damson AGM, Shropshire Damson and ‘Merryweather’ (pictured above)

Damsons are produced on trees and ready to harvest from August to October in the UK

They will come true from a saved stone, but you could be waiting many years for the tree to mature and bear fruit

When do damson trees produce fruit?

The damson trees upon which the fruit is grown produce a wonderful blossom in the spring, with the fruits being ready to harvest late summer to early autumn

Damson trees take a long time to mature and produce a harvest, but when they do it is so worth it

Which damson tree has the tastiest fruits?

There are other types of Damson, but the Shropshire prune Damson tree is considered by many to have the tastiest fruits

They are deep purple with a yellow flesh, longer than other varieties, and oval-shaped

The Shropshire tree is smaller than other fruit trees, with a compact growth structure

Tree shapes can include, standard, half-standard and dwarf – some specialist fruit growers even offer damsons as columns, step overs or even fan trained ready to be grown against a wall.Good types to try include ‘Farleigh’, ‘Merryweather’ and ‘Prune Damson’. You can also grow damsons in containers – often even more successfully than plums – providing you use a suitable rootstock.

Edible fruit

The damson or damson plum, also archaically called the damascene, is an edible drupaceous fruit, a subspecies of the plum tree.
Varieties of insititia are found across Europe, but the name damson is derived from and most commonly applied to forms that are native to Great Britain.
Damsons are relatively small ovoid plum-like fruit with a distinctive, somewhat astringent taste, and are widely used for culinary purposes, particularly in fruit preserves and jams.

In particular, such laws specify the minimum age at which a person may legally buy or drink them.
This minimum age varies between 15 and 21 years, depending upon the country and the type of drink.
Most nations set it at 18
