They are seated within the upper and lower alveolar bone in the maxilla and mandible respectively and this exclusive type of joint is known as gomphosis. The teeth are divided into four quadrants within the mouth, with the division occurring between the upper and lower jaws horizontally and down the midline of the face vertically.
There are thirty-two teeth in total in the
oral cavity of an adult dentition. One half, or sixteen, are embedded in the maxilla, while the lower half are situated within the mandible. The teeth are arranged in the
mouth in 2 arches that contain 2 quadrants each (16 teeth in each arch, 8 teeth in each quadrant in the permanent dentition). The top arch is the maxillary arch and it is fixed. The bottom arch is the mandibular arch and it is capable of movement through the temporomandibular joint. Also, teeth are located by referring to them as either anterior or posterior. The anterior teeth are located in the
front of the mouth (the incisors and the cuspids). They are also visible when a person smiles. On the other hand, the posterior teeth are located at the
back of the mouth (bicuspids and molars).
The crown of each tooth projects into the mouth. The root of each tooth descends below the gum line, into the jaw. Cavities (caries): Bacteria evade removal by brushing and saliva and damage the enamel and deeper structures of teeth. Most cavities occur on molars and premolars.
