- Join us in 2023 as the Pageant of the Masters celebrates the 90th anniversary of the first presentation of “living pictures” at the Festival of Arts.
ART COLONY: IN THE COMPANY OF ARTISTS acknowledges the deep connections of the Festival and Pageant to the early artists who settled in Laguna Beach. - The event is known for its tableaux vivants or "living pictures" in which classical and contemporary works of art are recreated by real people who are made to look nearly identical to the originals through the clever application of costumes, makeup, headdresses, lighting, props, and backdrops.
- The Festival programme includes performing arts (theatre, dance, stand-up comedy and live music), visual art exhibitions, films, talks and workshops, a large food and craft fair and historical tours of the city.
- The Pageant of the Masters is a 90-minute theatrical performance where famous works of art are brought to life onstage.
A live narrator guides the audience through the story of each piece, complete with music by a full orchestra.
The Festival of Arts Fine Art Show features works for sale by Orange County artists. - The theme for the 2023 Pageant of the Masters is "Art Colony: In the Company of Artists." Pictured on the program cover is the artwork "The Sketchers” (detail) by John Singer Sargent, 1913.
