PDF For Medical Laboratory Technology Students

i Preface Books on Medical history are full of fascinating information on the study of urine It has been known for centuries that abnormalities in urine may indicate disease and the analysis of urine are developed from simple visual examination to the modern automated methods

PDF Urinalysis: A Comprehensive Review

Urine must be refrigerated if it cannot be examined promptly; delays of more than two hours between collection and examination often cause unreliable results 2 Physical Properties: Color and Odor

PDF Urinalysis: how to interpret results

Urine testing or urinalysis is a valuable tool to screen an patient and diagnose their health status It provides valuable information about hydration renal and urinary tracts liver disease diabetes mellitus and urinary-tract infections

PDF Chemical Analysis CHAPTER 4 of Urine

T he routine urinalysis includes chemical testing for pH protein glucose ketones occult blood bilirubin uro- bilinogen nitrite leukocyte esterase and strip test method for specific gravity The urinalysis offered by labo- ratories depends on the type of dipstick that is used

  • What is the clinical value of a random urine specimen?

The testing of random urine specimen has little clinical value. The specific gravity of a urine specimen is often measured with a urinometer. The urinometer is a glass float weighted with mercury, with an air bulb above the weight and a graduated stem on the top (Fig 3.1).

  • How do I get the correct specific gravity readings in urine?

To obtain the correct specific gravity readings in urine, the urinometer must be weighted to read exactly 1.000 in distilled water. The reading on the urinometer scale should be exactly 1.000. If it is not, a correction must be applied to all values obtained for urine specimens with the urinometer.

  • What is the correct urinometer reading?

For example, if the specific gravity of the urine is 1.022 at 23 oC, and the urinometer has been calibrated at 20 oC, the correct reading is 1.022+0.001= 1.023.However, significant error will result if the reading is taken on the urine specimen that has been refrigerated.

Urine Analysis Interpretation of Urine Analysis

Urine pH •Physiologic urine pH ranges from 4 5 to 8 •Most accurate if done promptly •Not sufficiently accurate to be used for diagnosis of renal tubular acidosis (check ABG and urine lytes) •Changing urine pH to either acidic or alkaline may prevent development of certain types of kidney stones Contents: Urine Analysis • Appearance or

affect color Urochrome is the pigment that gives urine its characteristic yellow color A variety of medications and other agents may cause the urine to change color The most common cause of discoloration is blood, which may give the urine a pink, red, or smoky appearance Blood appears in the urine with many disorders, and small amounts of

    Urinalysis Interpretation

Red urine may be due to blood, haemoglobin, or beetroot Iron supplements may cause a dark brown specimen, as might amounts of prophobilin or urobilin (a chemical produced in the intestines) Normal urine is also transparent Turbid or cloudy urine may result from infection the presence of blood cells, bacteria or yeast (eg Candida)

    Urinalysis - HDCN

Urine that is exposed to air for a long time can also have elevated pH due to loss of CO 2 from the urine Specific gravity Specific gravity is the weight of urine relative to distilled water and re-flects the number and size (weight) of particles in urine Osmolality is dependent only on the number of particles (solute concentration) in urine

urine may range from 4 6 to 8 0 but averages around 6 0, so it is usually slightly acidic There is no abnormal range as such, since the urine can normally vary from acid to alka-line For this reason, it is important for the physician to cor-relate the urine pH with other information to determine whether there is a problem Metabolic and renal
