In the first stanza of ‘Invictus,’ the speaker immediately sets the stage for his reader. He says, “Out of the night that covers me,/Black as the Pit from pole to pole.” Henley’s use of imagery is strong from the very first line of the poem. It is quite easy for the reader to picture a complete night.
