PISA is now conducting a second cycle of surveys beginning in 2009 with reading as the major subject and continuing in 2012 (mathematics)

  • What is the score of the PISA scale?

In each test subject, there is theoretically no minimum or maximum score in PISA; rather, the results are scaled to fit approximately normal distributions, with means for OECD countries around 500 score points and standard deviations around 100 score points.

  • What are the domains of PISA?

The subject areas or 'domains' assessed by PISA are reading literacy, mathematics, and science.
In each ‎cycle of PISA, one of these domains is the main focus ('major domain') of the assessment, with ‎less emphasis placed on the remaining domains ('minor domains').
In 2025, science will be the major domain.

  • The Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) is an international assessment that measures 15-year-old students' reading, mathematics, and science literacy.
The PISA 2022 results represent outcomes from the 8th cycle of PISA since its inception in 2000.

How do I access my PISA data?

The PISA data collected for these subnational education systems are available in the International Data Explorer (http://nces.ed.gov/surveys/international/ide/) and are also available from NCES as restricted-use data files (see the listings under "Data Products" at http://nces.ed.gov/surveys/pisa/publications.asp).

How are PISA scores calculated?

To determine whether performance improved, remained stable, or declined, PISA uses both year-to-year comparisons (e.g. between 2015 and 2018, or between 2009 and2018) and average trends over three or more assessment years (i.e. over a period of 6 years or longer).

Why is PISA controversial?

PISA has been controversial since the publication of its first results in 2000 because it is driven by two main concepts, free-market thinking and globalisation.
. Its results are taken very seriously by policy-makers and lead to neoliberal education policies.

When was the last PISA assessment?

PISA 2022.
. Typically, PISA is on a three-yearly cycle, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, PISA 2021 was postponed to 2022. 85 countries are taking part in PISA 2022, intended to take place from 26 July to 16 September 2022.
. Three key learning subject areas are tested: reading literacy, mathematics, and science.
