Electronic banking is the designated term for the new age banking system. It is based on the automated delivery of banking products and services to customers through electronic delivery channels [ 1 ].
At this stage, it would appear that operational risk, reputational risk, and legal risk may be the most important risk categories for most electronic banking and electronic money activities, especially for diversified international banks, and the next three subsections discuss specific manifestations of these types of risks.
A common definition for electronic banking comes from the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision: “e-banking includes the provision of retail and small value banking products and services through electronic channels as well as large vale electronic payments and other wholesale banking services delivered electronically” (BCBS 1998) [ 4 ].
Online banking typically offers bank statements, electronic bill payment, funds transfers between a customer’s checking and savings accounts (or to another customer’s account), loan applications and transactions, and purchasing or sales of investments, all of which allow customers to maintain their accounts without making a trip to the bank itself.
