Who qualifies as a UK citizen?
If you or your parents were born in the UK, you might automatically be a British citizen. Check if you're a British citizen based on whether you were: born in the UK or a British colony before 1 January 1983. born in the UK between 1 January 1983 and 1 October 2000.
'British citizenship' is one of six different types of British nationality status. Generally speaking, the other types do not automatically give the right to enter and leave and live and work in the UK without being subject to immigration controls ('the right of abode').
How can I become a British citizen?
You can usually apply for citizenship 12 months after you get indefinite leave to remain (or 'indefinite leave to enter') unless you're married to a British citizen. If you don't have either of those, you can check if you're eligible for indefinite leave to remain on GOV.UK.
Is it hard to get citizenship in Britain?
Adult migrants who apply for citizenship must usually have lived in the UK for at least five or six years and must already have the permanent right to live in the UK (i.e., ILR for non-EU citizens and permanent residence or settled status for EU citizens).
