Chemical tests transform an unknown into a different compound with an accompanying change in appearance.
These tests are often called classification tests because they identify the possible functional groups present.
How do you know if a compound is organic? A material is organic if it contains carbon bound to other atoms by covalence.
The other atoms most commonly contain hydrogen, oxygen, and/or nitrogen.
A few carbon compounds, including simple oxides (e.g.
CO2) and cyanides (e.g.
KCN), are arbitrarily omitted.
Baeyer's test: Aqueous bromine when added to unsaturated organic compound, gets decolourised.
