March 12, 1947 – December 25, 1991The Cold War was a period of geopolitical tension between the United States and the Soviet Union and their respective allies, the Western Bloc and the Eastern Bloc, that started in 1947 after the end of World War II and lasted to 1991.
During 1989 and 1990, the Berlin Wall came down, borders opened, and free elections ousted Communist regimes everywhere in eastern Europe.
In late 1991 the Soviet Union itself dissolved into its component republics.
With stunning speed, the Iron Curtain was lifted and the Cold War came to an end.
