Chaos persisted until the National Convention, elected by universal male suffrage and charged with writing a new constitution, met on September 20, 1792, and became the new de facto government of France.
The next day the Convention abolished the monarchy and declared a republic.
The conflicts of 1787 to 1789 over the monarchy's financial problems led to a major shift in the way France was governed.
In part because of the long drawn-out wars of the eighteenth century, the French government had for some time been spending much more than its annual revenue.
During the French Revolution, the French Constitution of 1791 created a new structure for the Government of France.
Specifically, it limited the powers of the monarchy of France, delegated legislative powers to an elected National Assembly, and created an elected judiciary.
On 24 February 1848, the monarchy was abolished and the Second Republic was proclaimed.
Despite later attempts to re-establish the Kingdom in the 1870s, during the Third Republic, the French monarchy has not restored.
