Analysis and Design Procedure of Corner Gusset Plate Connection
Sheng et al [5] based on inelastic plate buckling equation proposed a design method accompanied by some design charts for rectangular type gusset plate |
In design, gusset plates are treated as rectangular, axially-loaded members with a cross section Lw × t, where Lw is the effective width, and t is the plate thickness.
The effective width is calculated by assuming the stress spreads through the gusset plate at an angle of 30°.
Most gussets act as a short brace at the connection, and they also give more surface contact area for welds, and serve to hold the connection in a square (90 degree angle) when the connection is made.
Gusset plates, then, are installed to make a stronger connection between two steel components of a structure.
In a similar fashion, gussets are support features that reinforce areas such as walls or bosses to the floor.
Just as bridge beams and columns are supported at their vertex with gussets to add critical strength to the structure, the same concept applies to plastic injection molding.
The KISS Method
The method involves delivering the entire horizontal brace component directly to the beam through the beam-to-gusset connection and the entire vertical brace component directly to the column through the column- to-gusset connection.
To satisfy equilibrium, moments must be introduced.
