The independent variable was the temperature of the water in the glass cup while the dependent variable was how long the sticks glowed. Some controlled variables included 235 milliliters of water in each glass, the brand of glow stick used which was glow play, and the color of the glow sticks which was pink.
What is the purpose of the glow stick experiment?
No light can be released until the chemicals are mixed together. When you mix the chemicals together by cracking the glow stick, they react to make new chemicals and release excess energy in the form of light, transforming chemical energy into light energy.
The stick in the warm water glows more brightly than the stick in the cold water. The reaction that causes the stick to glow is happening much faster in the hot water, which makes the glow appear brighter. The cold water is slowing down the reaction. This is the reason people sometimes put glow sticks in the freezer.
What was the conclusion of the glow stick experiment?
We have proved that the hotter the particles the quicker and more vigorous the reaction is. The glow stick that was hottest, was glowing the brightest and it finished reacting quicker. During the reaction the particles are used up, as they are turned into new particles.
