The flexural strength of natural-fiber composites is also rather high. The limiting bending load is the flexural strength of NFC, beyond which the composite fails or breaks [ 161 ]. This strength depends on the bonding strength between the fibers and matrix.
Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites, comprised of a polymer matrix reinforced with fibers, have drawn significant interest in the last two decades as an alternative to traditional monolithic materials due to their higher specific strength and modulus, lightweight, adjustable deformation behavior, and good corrosion resistance.
This chapter discusses the advantages and the challenges of each type of reinforcing fibers in cement based composites. The main benefits of adding reinforcing fibers in cement are the improvement of tensile strength, flexural strength and toughness.
Fiber-reinforced polymer composite offers not only high strength to weight ratio, but also reveals exceptional properties such as high durability; stiffness; damping property; flexural strength; and resistance to corrosion, wear, impact, and fire.
