On the other hand, Japan and Germany are tied for the world's oldest countries with median ages of 46.1, which is nearly 30 years older than most African countries.
The number of people aged 65 and older is expected to double over the next three decades, reaching 1.6 billion in 2050.
Asia is leading this trend, with Hong Kong, South Korea and Japan expected to have the highest share of people aged 65 and older by 2050.
Asia and Europe are home to some of the world's oldest populations, those ages 65 and above.
At the top is Japan at 28 percent, followed by Italy at 23 percent.
Finland, Portugal, and Greece round out the top five at just under 22 percent.
