Around 28.4 million people in the United States went swimming at least once in 2021. The majority of them did so for fitness purposes, while around 2.8 million swam on a team. In 2019, over 31 million U.S. Americans took part in this sport.

What is the 120 rule for swimming?
A good rule of thumb to follow is the "120° rule." This means you should wear a wetsuit or dry suit whenever the sum of the air temperature and water temperature is equal to or less than 120°F. Warm weather does not cancel out the danger of cold water, wearing lighter clothing on a warm day increases risk.

National swimming federations were formed in several European countries from 1882 to 1889. In the United States swimming was first nationally organized as a sport by the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) on its founding in 1888.
