(kol-eye gel-sin) With this phrase you can walk up and start talking to anyone. It literally means “may your work come easily.” But it is an unofficial way to start a conversation. (mare-aba) This is the basic way to say hello. (goon-eye-din) Obviously this a way to greet a Turkish speaking person in the morning.
When you meet someone for the first time, it’s always polite to greet them. In Turkish, you would say “Merhaba” (Hello). If you’re greeting someone in the evening, you can say “İyi akşamlar!” (Good evening). How do you reply to Merhaba? If someone greets you with “Merhaba”, you can reply with “Merhaba! Nasılsın?” (Hello! How are you?).
Remember, this Turkish PDF lesson is just a list of words with translations. The BEST way to learn with this is not to overthink about it. Just spend 3-4 minutes reading through it on a daily basis. Eventually, you’ll know them all without the pain of memorization. Another good way would be to print it out and write the words out too.
That’s exactly why we’ve put together this list of 100 basic Turkish phrases for tourists! The Turkish language is so different from other European languages, but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible to learn! If you’ve already read our previous blog post on basic Turkish words, then learning these phrases will be much easier.
