  • How do you hydrolyze an amide?

Hydrolysis of amides is typically not an easy thing to do. Typical conditions for hydrolysis of an amide involve heating the amide with aqueous acid for extended periods. Cyclic amides are called, “lactams”. Just as undoing a belt results in a simple strip of leather, hydrolysis of a cyclic lactam results in a linear amino acid.

  • How is amide hydrolysis catalyzed?

Biological amide hydrolysis, as in the hydrolysis of peptides and proteins, is catalyzed by the proteolytic enzymes. These reactions will be discussed in Chapter 25. An indirect method of hydrolyzing some amides utilizes nitrous acid. Primary amides are converted easily to carboxylic acids by treatment with nitrous acid.

  • What is carboxylic acid neutralization?

q This is the neutralization of the carboxylic acid by the hydroxide anion (just as in the case of base-promoted ester hydrolysis). q The overall reaction, starting from the amide, goes to completion because the carboxylate anion has greater resonance stabilization than the amide.
