Australian English is a major variety of the language with a distinctive accent and lexicon, and differs slightly from other varieties of English in grammar and spelling. Around 120 to 170 Indigenous languages and dialects are spoken today, but many of these are endangered.
Australian Aboriginal languages are a unique language group, having no generally accepted genetic connections with non-Australian languages. (Despite its name, the Austronesian language family does not include Australian Aboriginal languages.)
Australia - Languages, Dialects, Indigenous: Although English is not Australia’s official language, it is effectively the de facto national language and is almost universally spoken. Nevertheless, there are hundreds of Aboriginal languages, though many have become extinct since 1950, and most of the surviving languages have very few speakers.
Australian languages are of interest to general linguistics because of their unusual grammatical structures. An obvious feature of many of the languages is free word order, which contrasts dramatically with the syntactically regulated ordering of words and phrases in English and many other languages.
