Japan viewed China's steps toward reversing the damage of the previous century as a threat to its control of Manchuria's railroads and of the Kwantung Leased Territory.
Losing anything to China was seen as unacceptable, because of course the Japanese had spent the last 50 years desperately trying to avoid being China.
On September 18, 1931, an explosion destroyed a section of railway track near the city of Mukden.
The Japanese, who owned the railway, blamed Chinese nationalists for the incident and used the opportunity to retaliate and invade Manchuria.
It was the bloodiest conflict—and largest war—in military history.
According to some estimates, China suffered 14 million casualties during World War II, a number included in the approximately 35 million Chinese people who were killed or wounded during over a decade of Japanese occupation.
