Poorly handled conversations can lead to misunderstandings and negative impacts on relationships and engagement in the organisation. Organisations can secure the support of an external facilitator with lived experience of race to support these conversations with credibility, sensitivity and confidentiality.
Conversations about race should be conducted in a safe space environment, to allow all employees to be heard, validated and to feel safe to respectfully express their experiences.
The Race Conversation is a groundbreaking and timely study that brought me, a white English Buddhist, new awareness of my own inner experience and has already benefitted my participation in the “race conversation” through greater understanding of how the construction of race impacts on the psychic and somatic experience of People of Colour
Talking about race and racism can be uncomfortable. Start with a warm-up activity or prompt aimed at getting people open and to set the environment for a safe conversation. Some questions to consider: How are you feeling about what’s happening in the world? What is your racial identity? Do you have privilege? How do you enter this conversation?
