DISCRETE AND CONTINUOUS DATA
Discrete and Continuous Data To place data on graphs and categorize types of data that work best with different graphs it is necessary to distinguish between different types of data to be graphed The first type of data to consider is discrete data This is a type of data in which separate items are counted |

Discrete vs continuous data are two broad categories of numeric variables. Numeric variables represent characteristics that you can express as numbers rather than descriptive language. When you have a numeric variable, you need to determine whether it is discrete or continuous. You count discrete data. You measure continuous data.
discrete measurement involves only integers. The discrete values cannot be subdivided into parts. For example, the number of children in a class is discrete data. You can’t count 1.5 kids. The number of students in a class. The number of workers in a company. The number of home runs in a baseball game.
Quantity is a property that physical things have, and the way to nd out about the quantity of something is to count (if the quantity is discrete) or measure (if it is continuous). Mathemat-ics thus has two main branches, arithmetic (dealing with the discrete) and geometry (dealing with the continuous).
Discrete variables can only assume specific values that you cannot subdivide. Typically, you count them, and the results are integers. For example, if you work at an animal shelter, you’ll count the number of cats. Discrete data can only take on specific values. For example, you might count 20 cats at the animal shelter. These variables cannot have
Continuous variables can assume any numeric value and can be meaningfully split into smaller parts. Consequently, they have valid fractional and decimal values. In fact, continuous data have an infinite number of potential values between any two points. Generally, you measure them using a scale. When you see decimal places for individual values, yo
Both types of variables are essential in statistics. At the animal shelter, after counting the cats, you’ll weigh them. The counts are discrete values while their weights are continuous. Chances are you’ll need to analyze both types of variables. It’s vital to recognize discrete vs continuous data because there are different ways to graph and analy
