  • How does hydrazine react with aldehydes and ketones?

Hydrazine will react with aldehydes and ketones to form hydrazones (similar to imine formation). Heating of the hydrazone with base converts it to an alkane. The combination of hydrazone formation and reduction (of aldehydes and ketones) is called the Wolff-Kishner reaction. Hemiacetals have one hydroxide and one ether attached to a carbon.

  • What happens when aldehydes and ketones react with Grignard reagents?

Reactions of aldehydes and ketones with Grignard reagents produce potentially quite complicated alcohols. The reaction of aldehydes and ketones with ammonia or 1º-amines forms imine derivatives, also known as Schiff bases (compounds having a C=N function).
