1 Using knowledge of the way magnetic field lines travel HYPOTHESIZE what the magnetic field lines will look like for each of the magnets 2 Carefully place an iron filing plate on each magnet/magnet combination a Shake the plate so that the iron filings form a thin homogenous layer on the plate b |
A magnetic field diagram (Lab 1-4) can be used to estimate the actual strength and direction of the over-all magnetic field of a system. The strength of the magnetic force is proportional to the density of the magnetic field lines in 3- dimensions.
In this lab the magnetic fields surrounding bar magnets are mapped out using a compass and iron filings. The end of your compass needle that points toward the magnetic pole of the Earth in the northern hemisphere (when it is far away from any magnet or other magnetic material) is by definition an N pole.
For example, placing a box of iron paperclips with a magnet, the paper clips will not only attract to the magnet but also to other clips. Magnetic field lines go out from the North pole and into the south pole. Repelling poles will scatter the field lines. We can use a compass to plot magnetic field lines. Move the compass to the mark.
Placing the opposite poles of two bar magnets together will create a uniform magnetic field between the two magnets. This is drawn as a series of straight parallel lines from the north to south pole. Only three elements are magnetic: iron, cobalt and nickel. Steel, which is made of iron mixed with carbon, is also magnetic.
