THE CULTURAL ICEBERG
ICEBERG HALL\'S ANALOGY FOR APPROACHING INTERCULTURAL UNDERSTANDING The concept of the cultural iceberg was coined in 1976 by Edward T Hall who suggested that culture is analogous to an iceberg in that only about 10 of the iceberg is visible at any given time and that a large part of it is hidden beneath the surface |
Hall developed the iceberg theory of culture, which states that the viewed, observed, and experienced parts of culture constitute 10% of the entire cultural context of a society.
Therefore, 90% percent of the culture is invisible and made up of beliefs and perspectives in the minds of individual members of society.
Edward T.
Hall thinks that we communicate and act differentely depending on our nationality.
Some cultures depend on the spoken word in order to understand each other and other cultures rely on body language when communicating with each other.
Organisational culture is similar to an iceberg.
Often leaders make decisions keeping only 10% in mind and neglecting the other 90%.
Only a small portion of what it truly is is visible to us most of the time.
While one can see 10% of the iceberg above the surface, 90% of the iceberg is below the water.
