It would appear that language contact situations generally are subject to two often conflicting forces—the need to achieve communicative efficiency adequate for the purpose of the interaction (dynamics of accommodation) and the need to preserve a distinct sense of group identity (group loyalty).
As an interdisciplinary branch of multilingual research, contact linguistics incorporates three areas of inquiry: language use, language user, and language sphere. This article explains the field of contact linguistics along with its significant parameters. You do not currently have access to this chapter.
Contact-induced linguistic change is most easily exemplified from data from spoken languages, but data from written languages exemplifies its effects as well, sometimes in ways that are not also reflected in the corresponding spoken language modality.
The kind of interaction will also affect the linguistic impact of the contact. For example, if people from a remote community visit the market where all the people speak another language, the visitors will learn vocabulary necessary for commerce, but possibly little more.
