Core French: The child enters an English school where French is taught as a subject. Children learn basic French. It’s the hope that students will have some basic comprehension of French. Based on these descriptions, it seems like the answer should be easy right? Not always.
Every student enrolled in the Regular English Program has access to French Immersion programs starting in grade 1 (Early French Immersion), grade 4 (Middle French Immersion). At the secondary level, Core French is a single credit course (110 hours) and is offered at all levels from grades 9 to 12.
From Ontario Schools K-12, Policy and Program Requirements, 2016. Students with special education needs will be included in the Core French program and offered the appropriate accommodations and support to meet the curriculum expectations for the grade level in Core French.
Therefore, once students embark on an instructional sequence in Core French, they must be given the opportunity to continue in an uninterrupted program to Grade 8. The elementary school curriculum for Core French is designed to prepare students for success in the corresponding program at the secondary level.
