primary index

What is primary index in a database?

A primary index is an ordered file whose records are of fixed length with two fields: The first field is the same as the primary key of data file. The second field is a pointer to the data block where the primary key is available. - Source Index created for the first record of each block is called block anchors.

What is the difference between sorted and primary indices?

If the indexes are sorted, then it is called as ordered indices. If the index is created on the primary key of the table then it is called as Primary Indexing. Since these primary keys are unique to each record and it has 1:1 relation between the records, it is much easier to fetch the record using it.

Can there be more than one primary index?

More than one primary index or several clustered indexes also cannot exist because there may only be at most one physical ordering field per file. A primary index contains two fields; the primary key value and a disk block pointer. A primary index therefore consists of key-value pairs, just like the HashMap in Java or Dictionary in .NET.

What is the index of a file?

The index is usually specified on one field of the file (although it could be specified on several fields) One form of an index is a file of entries , which is ordered by field value The index is called an access path on the field.
