Malcolm X was born in Omaha, but moved around the country during his early years. His father died when Malcolm was 6 years old and, while the death was ruled to be a streetcar accident, it’s believed by historians that he was killedby members of the Ku Klux Klan. As an adult, Malcolm became a minister and activist for the African American community...
In 1964, Malcolm X left the NOI. Several incidents had led him to question his relationship with the organization. Best known as the place where Malcolm X was assassinated on February 21, 1965, the Audubon Ballroom has long been a center of African American social and political activity.

Hungarian immigrant William Fox, creator of 20 th Century Fox, originally constructed the ballroom in 1912. 1 Thomas W. Lamb, a prominent theater designer, was commissioned by Fox to build the ballroom. The Audubon consisted of a 2500-seat theater, and a seated ballroom for 200 guests on the second floor.
At 3940 Broadway and West 165th Street once stood the historic Audubon Theater and Ballroom. Constructed in 1912 by Fox Film Corporation founder William Fox, the Audubon Theater and Ballroom was one of the first theaters in the Fox theater group for vaudeville and movies to open in Washington Heights.
