The story of King Arthur and his knights is the tale of a time of peace justice and brotherhood It is the story of Knights living by a Code of Chivalry who created briefly an ideal world based on honor and good deeds It is the story that ends in betrayal and tragedy but it leaves us with the hope that another such time might come again |
“Legend” generally refers to a story that is fiction, and studying the legends quickly show they are not real in the same way history is real. An actual person is probably at the core of the legend, but the legend preserves very little about the real Arthur.
The Arthurian legends are stories about the character of King Arthur. They form an important part of Britain's national mythology. Arthur may be based on a real person from history, possibly a Celtic warlord of the late 400s ce. The legends, however, have little to do with history.
Though Arthur may not have been a real person, his mythic power would only grow stronger as the centuries passed. English rulers from Henry VIII to Queen Victoria have appropriated the Arthur legend for political purposes, while countless writers, painters, photographers, filmmakers and other artists have produced their own versions for posterity.
When put all together, it seems likely that Arthur is probably a composite character, cobbled together from Celtic mythology, Welsh and Roman-Briton history, and French legend. Despite his dubious ancestry, King Arthur probably was actually based upon a real figure or figures.
