Electric Currents and Simple Circuits
Oct 8 2009 · RC-1 RC Circuits An RC circuit is a circuit with a resistor (R) and a capacitor (C) RC circuits are used to construct timers and filters Example 1 Very simple RC circuit: a capacitor C charged to an initial voltage V0 = Q0/C attached to a resistor R with a switch switch +Q0 C R C = Q ⇒ V Q = –Q0 V 0 0 C |
RC Circuits
Circuits that have both resistors and capacitors: R K ε K R Na ε R Cl ε Na + S Cl + With resistance in the circuits capacitors do not charge and discharge instantaneously – it takes time (even if only fractions of a second) |
RC Circuits
Result: time = resistance x capacitance (the units work out to seconds) Actually the current is not constant; as the charge decreases the voltage decreases so the current decreases so charge decreases more and more slowly Even so (resistance) x (capacitance) is a good first estimate of the time |

A signal contains three parameters: magnitude, frequency, and phase. Any change of these parameters in the input signal will affect the output signal. The RC circuit has many interesting characteristics while staying one of the most basic circuit systems.
RC filters can be used to filter out the unwanted frequencies. In the study of electronics, a popular device known as a 555 timer provides timed voltage pulses. The time between pulses is controlled by an RC circuit. These are just a few of the countless applications of RC circuits.
An RC (resistor + capacitor) circuit will have an exponential voltage response of the form v(t) = A + B e-t/RC where constant A is the final voltage and constant B is the difference between the initial and the final voltages. (ex is e to the x power, where e = 2.718, the base of the natural logarithm.) The product RC is called the time constant
