aerobic and anaerobic process
Glycolysis occurs in both aerobic and anaerobic states.
What is a aerobic process?
(ayr-OH-bik RES-pih-RAY-shun) A chemical process in which oxygen is used to make energy from carbohydrates (sugars).
Also called aerobic metabolism, cell respiration, and oxidative metabolism.
What is the anaerobic process?
Anaerobic processes occur in the absence of free or combined oxygen, and result in sulfate reduction and methanogenesis.
They usually produce biogas, a mixture of mostly methane and carbon dioxide, as a useful by-product and tend to generate lower amounts of biosolids (sludge) as by-product.
What is the difference between aerobic and anaerobic processes?
Aerobic respiration needs oxygen to occur, while anaerobic does not.
This presence of oxygen determines what products will be created.
During aerobic respiration, carbon dioxide, water, and ATP are produced.
During anaerobic respiration, lactic acid, ethanol, and ATP are created.
