Using Libraries Some Common C Library Functions
Overview Libraries are shared collections of code that programmers can use to work with one another Libraries usually include functions that may be commonly used among pro-grammers For example the C library string h includes many useful premade functions to manipulate strings (see below) |
Math 127: Functions
1 Basics We begin this discussion of functions with the basic de nitions needed to talk about functions De nition 1 Let X and Y be sets A function f from X to Y is an object that for each element x 2 X assigns an element y 2 Y We use the notation f : X ! Y to denote a function as described |

How do I use a function from a library in C?
To use a functions from a library in C, remember to #include the header file (such as with #include ), which defines the library's functions, at the top of your source code file. When compiling your code, you'll also need to link the library so that the resulting object code knows how to execute the functions.
Why do we need a C library?
For example, the C library string.h includes many useful premade functions to manipulate strings (see below). By allowing us to use functions that others have already written, libraries enable us to build off of the work of others and use their func-tions in our own programs, instead of reinventing those functions ourselves.
What is a function declaration in C?
(Recall that in C, a declaration merely provides information that a function or variable exists and gives its type. For a function declaration, information about the types of its arguments might be provided as well. The purpose of declarations is to allow the compiler to correctly process references to the declared variables and functions.
What is a function in math?
Here is a definition of a function. A function is a rule which maps a number to another unique number. In other words, if we start off with an input, and we apply the function, we get an output. For example, we might have a function that added 3 to any number. So if we apply this function to the number 2, we get the number 5.
