Curb extensions can often be lengthened to create public spaces, landscaped areas, or transit waiting areas. They can also be employed as neck-downs or chokers, tra?c calming techniques that reduce vehicle travel lanes. Increased pedestrian visibility at intersections through improved sight lines
What is an engineered rubber curb?
The Engineered Rubber Curb is a completely customer-designed flexible rubber curbing that can be made into pre-formed traffic circles, islands, center medians and other traffic calming shapes formed to your specification. It is ideal for concrete curb replacement, curb extensions or permanent sidewalks.
How wide should a curb be?
Coordinate with Fire Department if narrowing curb-to-curb width to 14’ or narrower. Curb extensions (including the taper) should be at least 20’ in length when there is not a stop sign and at least 30’ in length if there is a stop sign.
Should a curb extension encroach on a bike lane?
Curb extensions should not encroach on cyclists’ space. Where bike lanes use a painted inside edge, the bike lane should be painted continuously as the bike lane passes the curb extension, and the bulb-out should be set back so that the gutter does not extend into the bike lane.
