What is the lever rule method?
Lever rule: An expression of conservation of matter in which the relative phase amounts are determined from the overall alloy composition and the coexisting phase compositions, assumed to be in global equilibrium at each temperature.
What is the lever rule with the tie-line?
From the tie-line we know that the two phases at a given temperature have two different compositions, but overall the amounts of these two compositions must add up to the alloy's overall composition, Co.
This is the basis for the lever rule. The lever rule provides fractional values of the co-existing phases.
In the context of the iron-iron carbide phase diagram, the lever rule can be applied to determine the relative amounts of ferrite (α-Fe) and cementite (Fe3C) present in a given sample of steel, based on its carbon content.
What is the rule of levers?
The Law of the Lever is ( E ) ( R ) = ( L ) ( r ) , where E is the effort force, R is the lever arm connected to the effort, L is the load, and r is the lever arm connected to the load.
In essence, the product of the lever arm and the force is the same for both the effort and the load.
