It is recommended that the number of airway interventions are limited, and blind techniques using a bougie or through supraglottic airway devices have been superseded by video- or fibre-optically guided intubation.

If intubation is difficult, there is little point in repeating the same procedure unless something can be changed to improve the chance of success. This may include the patient's position, the intubating device or blade, adjuncts such as introducers and stylets, depth of neuromuscular block, and personnel.
