What is the AIS requirement as per SOLAS?
The IMO Convention for the Safety Of Life At Sea (SOLAS) Regulation V/19.2. 4 requires all vessels of 300 GT and above engaged on international voyages and all passenger ships, irrespective of size, to carry AIS onboard.
What is the standard AIS signal?
AIS transceivers use two different frequencies, VHF maritime channels 87B (161.975 MHz) and 88B (162.025 MHz), and use 9.6 kbit/s Gaussian minimum shift keying (GMSK) modulation over 25 kHz channels using the high-level data link control (HDLC) packet protocol.
There are two AIS classes: A and B.
The first is mandatory for all ships of 300 gross tonnages and above engaged in international voyages and all passenger ships.
The latter has limited functionality and is designed for ships that do not comply with SOLAS requirements.
What is AIS stand for?
The Automatic Identification System (AIS) is a short-range coastal tracking system currently used on ships.
It was developed to provide identification and positioning information to both vessels and shore stations.
