  • What is the formula for alcohol Igcse?

This is because the –OH groups hydrogen bond with the water.
Higher alcohols are less soluble since the hydrocarbon chain starts to break an appreciable number of hydrogen bonds in water.
The pH of both alcohols will show as neutral.

  • What are the first 4 alcohols in the homologous series?

    Their general formula is CnH(2n+1)OH.
Examples are methanol (CH3OH), ethanol (C2H5OH) and propanol (C3H7OH).

  • What are the 4 types of alcohol chemistry?

    Methanol1C1H2(1)+1OH = CH2+1OH = CH3OHEthanol2C2H2(2)+1OH = C2H4+1OH = C2H5OHPropanol3C3H2(3)+1OH = C3H6+1OH = C3H7OHButanol4C4H2(4)+1OH = C4H8+1OH = C4H9OH

Alcohols contain a bond between O-H, where the oxygen is bonded to a carbon. This is their functional group, used in reactions. As we have seen with alkanes and alkenes, alcohols can also be named. The first four alcohols in the homologous series are called methanol, ethanol, propanol and butanol.
