Poisoning involves four elements: the poison, the poisoned organism, the injury to the cells, and the symptoms and signs or death.
These four elements represent the cause, subject, effect, and consequence of poisoning.
What is the source of poisoning?
Possible poisonous substances include prescription and over-the-counter drugs, illicit drugs, gases, chemicals, vitamins, food, mushrooms, plants, and animal venom.
Some poisons cause no damage, whereas others can cause severe damage or death.
What causes toxicity?
The toxicity of a substance depends on three factors: its chemical structure, the extent to which the substance is absorbed by the body, and the body's ability to detoxify the substance (change it into less toxic substances) and eliminate it from the body.
