PDF CHAPTER 7 LECTURE NOTES

I Mutation Overview A Definitions 1 Mutation = a process that produces a gene or chromosome that differs from the wild type 2 Mutation = the gene or chromosome that results from a mutational process 3 a mutant is the organism or cell whose changed phenotype is attributed to a mutation B General Types 1

  • What are the different types of mutations?

Mutations are of several types. Changes within genes are called point mutations. The simplest kinds are changes to single base pairs, called base-pair substitutions. Many of these substitute an incorrect amino acid in the corresponding position in the encoded protein, and of these a large proportion result in altered protein function.

  • What are chromosomal mutations?

Mutations that span more than one gene are called chromosomal mutations because they affect the structure, function, and inheritance of whole DNA molecules (microscopically visible in a coiled state as chromosomes ).

  • What is the direct effect of a mutation?

The direct effect is relatively easy to assess because we can use our understanding of gene structure and expression to predict the impact that a mutation will have on genome function.

  • What is a mutation in biology?
