How are PHAs synthesized?
PHAs are polyesters synthesized and stored by various bacteria and archaea in their cytoplasm as water-insoluble inclusions.
PHAs are usually produced when the microbes are cultured with nutrient-limiting concentrations of nitrogen, phosphorus, sulfur, or oxygen and excess carbon sources. What is the biosynthetic pathway of PHA?
Metabolic pathways involved in Polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) synthesis from sugars, through glycolysis (a) or de novo fatty acid biosynthesis (b); from fatty acids, directly (c) or through fatty acid β-oxidation (d); and from alkanes, through alkane oxidation (e).
What is the production process of PHA?
These authors describe a three-step PHA production process consisting of: .
1) Feedstock production, where waste-based substrates are converted through anaerobic digestion to substrates for PHA production: organic and fatty acids. .
2) Selection of PHA producing microbial cultures under changing feeding conditions.1 Mechanism of polyhydroxybutyrate synthesis.
PHB biosynthesis by microbes occurs by the concentration of dual molecules of acetyl-CoA that would result in acetoacetyl-CoA which would be consequently condensed to hydroxybutyryl-CoA.
This final complex would be utilized as a single unit for the synthesis of PHB.
