Enterococcus faecium SF68 Indications and Efficacy in Human
Are enterococci phages effective against antibiotic-resistant infections?
Bacteriophages (phages) have been proposed as an efficient and alternative against antibiotic-resistant infections, as those found in chronic wounds. We have isolated and characterized two novel enterococci phages, the siphovirus vB_EfaS-Zip (Zip) and the podovirus vB_EfaP-Max (Max) to be applied during wound treatment.
Is Enterococcus faecium resistant to antibiotics?
Enterococci display intrinsic resistance to many antibiotics, and most clinical Enterococcus faecium isolates in the United States have acquired vancomycin resistance, leaving clinicians with a limited repertoire of effective antibiotics.
Which Enterococcus faecalis species are most important?
The species of the greatest clinical importance are Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium. Although the resistance characteristics of these two species differ in important ways, they can generally be categorized as intrinsic resistance, acquired resistance, and tolerance.
Does Enterococcus faecium cause endocarditis?
Infections due to Enterococcus faecalis tend to be more virulent than infections due to Enterococcus faecium. In addition, bacteremia due to E. faecalis is more likely to be associated with endocarditis than bacteremia due to E. faecium.
