The Great Inka Empire
In less than a century the Inca expanded their empire from about 400000 km2 (155000 sq mi) in 1448 to 1800000 km2 (690000 sq mi) in 1528 just before the arrival of the Spanish Inka Moral Law Ama suwa – Don’t steal Ama llulla – Don’t lie Ama quella – Don’t be lazy When the Spanish arrived in 1532 they were amazed by what they found |

The Incas
Machu Picchu is a pre-Columbian 15th-century Inca site located in the Cuzco Region of Peru South America (Figure 1) Often referred to as the \"City of the Incas\" most archaeologists believe that it was built as an estate for the Inca emperor Pachacuti (1438–1472) |
What is the story of the Incas?
The story of the Incas, who in 1492 were in the midst of extending their domain in the Andes, was the fi nal pre-Columbian chapter of a complex saga of human adaptation over several millennia in a context of formidable environmental and social challenges.
Why did the Incas call their Empire Tawantinsuyu?
The Incas’ own name for their empire refl ected their belief that they had conquered the known world: Tawantinsuyu, the “Four Parts Joined,” or the Realm of the Four Quarters.
What metal did the Incas use?
The Incans adopted much of their metalworking characteristics from the metalwork of Chimu. Because of their expertise, many metalworkers were taken back to the capital city of Cuzco to continue their metalworking for the emperor. The Inca were well known for their use of gold, silver, copper, bronze and other metals.
Why did the Inca conquer Cuzco & Quito?
The Inca were highly successful in battle. But they had been weakened by civil war, ravaged by deadly diseases, and upset by the loss of their leader. They were in no condition to oppose the Spaniards. By June of 1534, Pizarro had conquered Cuzco and Quito. A few years later, the Spanish conquest of the region was mostly complete.

Acknowledgments
As most authors will understand, writing this book was a labor of love, but one that demanded more time than I ever imagined. I appreciate the preternatural patience of Rita Wright, my friend and colleague, who commissioned me to write this overview of the Inca and then waited much longer than I had promised to see it come to fruition. I wish to th

How did the Inca Empire become so powerful?
- Inca society was highly stratified.
. The emperor ruled with the aid of an aristocratic bureaucracy, exercising authority with harsh and often repressive controls.
. Inca technology and architecture were highly developed, although not strikingly original.
What caused the fall of the Inca Empire?
- While historians concluded that there were plenty of reasons for the fall of the Inca Empire, they ruled out that the coming of the foreign epidemics and advanced weaponry used by the Spaniards were behind their losses.
. Moreover, the Spaniards were skilled in the manipulation of power.
. They used this trick as a key strategy in defeating the Empire.
