What services are available to help d/Deaf Hawaiian residents learn ASL?
There are a handful of services available to help d/Deaf Hawaiian residents learn ASL and also for those who wish to learn ASL to become interpreters, such as the Aloha State Association of the Deaf and the American Sign Language Interpreter Education Program.
What are American Sign Language (ASL) classes?
Our American Sign Language (ASL) classes are introductory classes teaching basic conversational ASL. Classes meet for eight (8) weeks, once a week. The final class is a Silent Dinner with the Deaf Community. No books are required. Signed vocabulary is available online for students upon request. Register by completing the online registration.
What is American Sign Language and Deaf culture?
DAC offers a program to introduce the community at large to American Sign Language and Deaf Culture. The program is to encourage students to appreciate and have better understanding of the intricate language and its rich culture. A Deaf instructor, Dava Tutt, who has many years of experience in teaching the course, teaches the program.
Why should you take American Sign Language classes?
American Sign Language classes are provided to help hearing people converse with neighbors and family members and to give those who become deaf later in life another mode to communicate. Taught by qualified Deaf instructors with many years of teaching experience, our ASL classes offer an immersive educational experience.
