Ch 06 Amines and Amides
Amines and amides are abundant in nature They are a major component of proteins and enzymes nucleic acids alkaloid drugs etc (Alkaloids are N-containing weakly basic organic compounds; thousands of these substances are known ) Amines are organic derivatives of ammonia NH3 in which one or more of the three H’s is replaced by a carbon group |
How to name amines and amides?
How to name amines and amides. An amino group consists of a nitrogen atom bonded to two hydrogen atoms, written as -NH2. If the hydrogens are replaced by R groups, the group is referred to as a substituted amino group. Amines and amides are two compounds which contain amino or substituted amino groups.
Why are amines weak bases?
Watch this video animation of how DNA is packaged for a visual lesson in its structure. Like ammonia, amines are weak bases due to the lone pair of electrons on their nitrogen atoms: The basicity of an amine’s nitrogen atom plays an important role in much of the compound’s chemistry.
How are amides formed?
Amides are also formed when acid anhydrides react with 1° or 2° amines. Unlike amines, amides are not basic. Neurotransmitters are small molecules that carry nerve impulses from one neuron to the next. long stemlike projections (the axons), and short fibers connected to the soma (the dendrites).
