Are abdominal wall defects congenital or acquired?
Abdominal wall defects may be either congenital or acquired and can have a significant impact on patients’ quality of life. In contrast to the thorax and pelvis, the abdomen is relatively deficient in skeletal support, comprising of only the vertebral column and lower ribs posteriorly.
How is the abdominal cavity bounded?
The abdominal cavity is bounded anteriorly and laterally by the relatively pliant anterior abdominal wall, and posteriorly, by the more rigid posterior abdominal wall. The abdominal cavity is lined by a serous membrane, the peritoneum. The peritoneum is reflected over the abdominal viscera.
What are the two musculofascial apertures in the abdominal cavity?
These two apertures, together with abdominal walls, bound the abdominal cavity. There are two musculofascial abdominal walls; anterolateral and posterior. They attach to the surrounding bony structures; vertebral column, inferior margin of the thoracic cage and superior margins of the bony pelvis.
What is a topography of abdominal viscera?
To facilitate description of the topography of abdominal viscera, and to enable the clinician to convey with precision the location of abdominal lumps and abdominal pain, it is conventional to divide the abdominal cavity into regions by plotting a number of imaginary lines or planes on the anterior abdominal wall.
