  • What is the structure of the ribose?

    Ribose Structure
As a closed ring, ribose forms a five member ring of atoms single bonded to each other in a pentagonal shape.
The ring is made of four carbon atoms and one oxygen atom.
There are three hydroxyl OH groups attached to the first, second and third carbons in the ring.

  • What is a diastereomer and examples?

Diastereomers are the stereoisomers that are non identical, do not have mirror images, and hence are non-superimposable on each other.
Examples of diastereomers include cis and trans-2-butene, D-threose and D-erythrose, 2-chloro,3-bromobutane, and so on.

  • From this definition, D-ribose has four chiral centers, which are boxed in the structure above.
The extracyclic carbon is not chiral because it has two hydrogen atoms attached to it.
Therefore, there are four chiral centers in D-ribose.
